12 things to know about Andy Jassy, Amazon's next CEO who will replace billionaire Jeff Bezos

1. FROM HARVARD TO AMAZON:
Andy Jassy is the current CEO of Amazon Web Services, the company's cloud platform. He has an MBA from Harvard Business School. Before joining Amazon he was a project manager at MBI.
2. SHADOW ADVISOR TO BEZOS
In the early 2000s, Jassy assisted Bezos as a technical assistant and played a key role in growing the company outside just book sales. Jassy is a close mate to Jeff Bezos and has accompanied him in a prominent meeting that changed the future of the company. In his letter talking about Jassy he wrote, "He will be an outstanding leader, and he has my full confidence."
3. 24 YEARS AT AMAZON
Jassy joined Amazon in 1997, the same year the company went public, and is one of the long-time Amazon executives.
4. LOSING A $10 BILLION PENTAGON CONTRACT TO MICROSOFT
One of the biggest challenges Jassy faced was losing a $10 billion Pentagon cloud contract to Microsoft. Amazon lost the contract due to former President Donald Trump for unfairly influencing the process, as reported by GadgetsNow.
5. LEADER IN THE CLOUD COMPUTING INDUSTRY
Today, AWS is one of the leading cloud computing company and credit for the same goes to Jassy. The cloud storage arm accounted for 67% of the entire company’s operating profit last quarter. AWS has emerged as a force beating out Microsoft and Google. "The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated cloud adoption by several years and that the rate of growth at AWS continues to accelerate at a phenomenal rate," said Jassy, CEO of AWS as per IANS.
6. REINVENTION IS THE KEY
Jassy is the true believer in reinvention and shared what goes into the making of it. “You want to be reinventing when you are healthy, you want to be reinventing all the time. You have got to be manancial and relentless and tenacious about getting to the truth...You have to know what’s working and what’s not working," said Jassy in December at a company forum as per a report by Reuters. He also pointed out that 83 of the Fortune 500 companies from 1970 are still on the list — and only half are on the list from 2000.
7. HIGHEST PAID EXECUTIVE AT AMAZON
As per a CNBC report, in just three years Jassy draws together more than $20 million. In 2016 alone, he raked $36 million and Bezos gathered around $1.7 million in total.
8. STOCK OVER $30 MILLION IN AMAZON
Jassy is believed to have stocks over $30 million at Amazon with a base salary of $175,000 as the CEO of AWS in 2020, as per The Week.
9. APPROACHED TO BE THE CEO OF MICROSOFT & UBER
As per a report by Insider, Ex-Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer reached out to Jassy and wanted him to be his replacement. Apparently, when Travis Kalanick stepped down as Uber CEO, Jassy was taken into consideration for the same.
10. PERSONAL LIFE
Jassy is married to Elana Rochelle Caplan and they have two kids together. The couple is settled in Seattle, US.
11. RAISING HIS VOICE ON SOCIAL CAUSE
Often when the need has arisen, Jassy shared his views on various social issues. He spoke about black lives matter and tweeted about the need for police accountability after of Breonna Taylor, a black medical worker who was shot by Louisville police officers in March during a botched raid on her apartment. He also spoke in favour of LGBTQ rights.
